Dr. Maya Gupta

Hi, I’m Dr. Gupta. I moved to London, Ontario in 2016. When I first came to London, I was new to the city and navigating many personal life changes and losses. I remember walking along the nature trails of the Thames River when I needed a moment of peace. It often became the place I turned to when I needed to pause, reflect, and refocus. This is the kind of space I hope to provide to you at Thames River Therapy.

I strongly believe that therapy is for everyone. It is important to me that each person feels seen and understood by their therapist. Although therapy can help you learn new coping skills, I see it as so much more than that. Therapy is a place to get in tune with yourself – your values, your dreams, your fears, your secrets. It is an opportunity to develop a stronger sense of self and connect with parts of yourself that may have been neglected or misunderstood.

I believe that therapy is both a science and an art. I am trained in a variety of evidence-based treatment modalities, which means that the treatments are based on scientific evidence and have been proven to work. However, I understand that science is based on averages and that as individuals, it is important to be able to adapt our therapeutic approach to meet the unique circumstances of each person’s life. I believe that your values, culture, and personal preferences should impact how therapy is delivered.

I am a registered clinical psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. I obtained my PhD in Clinical Psychology at Queen’s University and then completed my residency at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, working with the Youth Wellness Program, Mood Disorders Program, and Outpatient Schizophrenia program. I have worked at London Health Sciences Centre in the Prevention and Early Intervention Program for Psychosis (PEPP), which focuses on providing services to youth and young adults with complex mental health concerns. I have also worked at Thames Valley Family Health Team providing assessment and therapy to teens and adults with a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, burnout, and stress.

I currently hold an Adjunct Clinical Faculty position with Western University in the Department of Psychology, providing education and training to future clinical psychologists.

I am a member in good standing with the following organizations:

  • College of Psychologists of Ontario
  • Canadian Psychological Association
  • Ontario Psychological Association

My goal is to provide a service that fosters a sense of safety, authentic connection, creativity, and growth.  If this feels like a good fit for you, or if you are interested in learning more about Thames River Therapy, please reach out for a free 20-minute consultation.
